The efficient and timely booking in of stock is vital, to ensure availability for invoicing purposes. Electronic transmission of supplier data is an area in which significant improvements have recently been made - through the use of Licence Plate technology with one printer. TBS is continuing to work with other supply partners towards the same objective.
TBS stock holding is circa 35 million units across over 28,500 titles. The bulk store at Frating contains 26,000 pallet locations, with a further 10,000 pallet locations spread across three additional outside stores.
Titles need to be positioned correctly to ensure OTIF (On Time In Full) service and forward stock positioning is also crucial, with titles graded to support operational efficiencies: less walking, less stock movement, conveyor flow, etc. The database uses smooth algorithms to forecast sales profiles and recommends optimum stock moves. This information is then dissected by an expert team, who consider associated costs and possible causal factors for sales profiles, before initiating stock movements to support the operation.
Stock accuracy is vital and TBS operates a PI (Perpetual Inventory) system which is fully integrated with Vista. All titles are counted once a year and the inventory is fully supported by pro-active stock audit management. System information accuracy is crucial and title maintenance (price, invoice status, product weights and dimensions, etc) are carefully managed.
